About product

1:48 Chevalier (Knight on Horseback) - a resin figure of a rider on a horse

A resin set of a rider on a horse in 1:48 scale. Compared with the standing figures of the same line this is a markedly bulkier casting: the horse alone takes up several times the volume of a figure on foot, and the preparation and the assembly match that.

Placing it in the scene

A rider on a horse is always the main element of a scene, not an accessory. In 1:48 the height at the withers comes out at roughly three centimeters and the top of the rider's head a good deal higher, so the whole overtops every figure on foot in the same scale and draws the eye first. The composition is built accordingly: the horse gets the most open space, the other elements step back to the edges and must not cross its outline. A diorama base has to be deeper than for a figure on foot: a horse needs length to fit in a natural stance, and the shadow beneath it wants an area to fall on. The best viewing angle is usually from the side and slightly from below; from above the mass of the horse is reduced and the scene flattens.

Cleaning up and painting

The horse and the rider tend to be cast separately. First try the rider dry in the saddle and sand off any overlap of the thighs and the saddle, otherwise the figure will sit crooked. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw and scrape the parting lines that run along the legs of the horse and along the rider's sides with a scalpel held flat: on smooth hide every unfinished line shows once painted. Wash the whole casting in lukewarm soapy water and spray a thin primer. The coat of the horse is best built from a dark base through filters and a dry brush; it pays to paint it separately, before the rider is seated permanently. It is bonded with super glue, and sanding is done wet and with respiratory protection.

Who the figure is for

  • builders of vignettes that need one striking dominant element
  • modelers who want to try painting animal hide
  • anyone interested in historical figures in a small scale
  • modelers with experience of multi-part resin castings

The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The casting of a horse with a rider is substantially bulkier than a figure on foot, so it uses more material and calls for more mold work.

The exact division of the parts is given on the packaging. With mounted figures the horse tends to be cast separately, so count on a dry test fit and possibly sanding the saddle.

A deeper and longer one than a figure on foot. A horse in a natural stance takes up more room and needs an area beneath its body for the shadow to fall on.
