An injection-molded plastic kit of the German heavy bomber Dornier Do 217 K-1 in 1:48 scale from ICM. The model represents the K-1 version, that is the machine with twin-row BMW 801 radial engines and with the new, fully glazed nose without a separate windscreen. The box holds a detailed cockpit interior (including decals for the instrument panels), extensive clear parts for the glazing, a bomb bay with its load and decals for Luftwaffe machines. Given the size of the real aircraft, this is a large model for the display case.
The Do 217 was a development of the Do 17/Do 215, but in fact a much larger and heavier machine – a full-fledged heavy bomber with a large bomb load, used over Britain, in the Mediterranean and against shipping targets. The K version was given a new, fully glazed stepless nose with a far better view and was powered by BMW 801 radial engines. The key distinction for modelers: the M-1 version had liquid-cooled inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines instead – otherwise a very similar airframe, but completely different engine nacelles and a different silhouette. Both versions were built in parallel, because BMW radials were in short supply. So make sure in advance which version you want: K-1 = radial engines, M-1 = inverted V12 engines (the M-1 is a separate kit).
Work from the interior outwards: the cockpit and the bomb bay are built before the fuselage is closed and a great deal of them shows through the large glazing – a wash and dry-brushing pay off. Mask the extensive glazing carefully (masks are not included in the box), dry-fit the joints of the nacelles and the wing and count on some filling. Use a primer and an airbrush; the German camouflage scheme with squiggles or mottling is a rewarding exercise for a fine spray. Apply the decals over a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
