An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 Type 5 fighter in the form for Finnish service, in 1:48 scale from the maker Clear Prop Models. The model captures the early production Type 5 version with the national insignia of the Finnish Air Force. The package offers decals for Finnish schemes and is conceived as a more approachable boxing of this otherwise detailed kit.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a pioneering Soviet single-seat fighter — one of the first production fighters with a low-wing layout and retractable landing gear. It was marked by a short, stubby fuselage with a radial engine, which earned it a number of nicknames. The Type 5 version was an early production form. During the war the Finnish Air Force also operated several captured machines against their original owner, the Soviet Union, in the Winter War and the Continuation War. The Finnish I-16s carried the characteristic blue swastika national insignia of the period.
The short fuselage and the radial engine make the character of the model — work the engine behind the cowling up and bring it out with a wash, and pick out the cockpit and the instrument panel. Mask the clear parts if the canopy is open. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement, even out the surface with primer and apply the paint with an airbrush. Finnish schemes are typified by olive upper camouflage and a light undersurface; take care over the correct placing of the national insignia. Patina and traces of service on the radial engine can be worked up with washes and pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
