Zvezda Ka-52 Alligator, 1:48 is an injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat attack helicopter with its characteristic coaxial rotors; two pilot figures are in the package as well.
Responsibility details are not available.
This kit from the Russian manufacturer Zvezda depicts the Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter in injection-molded plastic in 1:48 scale. The kit is richly broken down and offers a worked-out two-seat cockpit with avionics, a faithfully rendered coaxial rotor system and a wide range of external stores: a 30 mm cannon, unguided rockets, pods, bombs and anti-tank guided missiles. Two pilot figures and decals for period options are in the package. Worth knowing: the same helicopter is also made as a kit in 1:35 scale by another manufacturer (Trumpeter), which is markedly larger. This is the smaller 1:48 from Zvezda, ideal for a collection of helicopters in the standard aircraft scale.
The Ka-52 is the two-seat development version of the Ka-50 family of attack helicopters from the Kamov design school. Its most striking feature is the coaxial rotor layout: two main rotors mounted one above the other turn in opposite directions, so their torques cancel each other out. The helicopter therefore needs no tail rotor, which is obvious at a glance and is the main difference from conventional attack helicopters. The second peculiarity is the side-by-side seating, whereas most attack helicopters have the crew in tandem. The Ka-52 also inherited ejection seats, an entirely exceptional solution on a helicopter; before ejection the rotor blades are blown off pyrotechnically. The armament consists of a trainable 30 mm cannon, anti-tank guided missiles and unguided rocket pods on the stub wings.
This is classic injection-molded plastic, so glue it with thin modeling cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into the seams by capillary action. Finish and paint the cockpit and both seats before you close the fuselage; on the glazed canopy masking and a gloss coat under the decals pay off. Assemble the coaxial rotors carefully and watch the alignment of the two heads; a rotor glued on crooked shows at once on the finished model. It is practical to paint the external stores separately and to fit them at the end. The typical Russian camouflage suits an airbrush, and the engraved lines are brought out with a panel wash and discreet dust effects on the landing gear and the lower fuselage.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
