The package belongs to the Battle Set range, which Italeri builds as themed complete sets for putting together one particular scene. Unlike a kit of a single vehicle or aircraft, the aim here is the whole: elements of buildings, terrain and figures that hold together in scale and in theme. Everything is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so this is modeling work, not a finished product. A scale of 1:72 is practical for dioramas, because it allows more equipment and more figures to be captured in a small area than larger scales do.
The fighting for Berlin in the spring of 1945 made up the closing phase of the war in Europe. It was urban combat in a densely built-up environment that fundamentally changes the character of how equipment is used: restricted visibility, short ranges, a fight for individual buildings and streets, damaged buildings and rubble as both an obstacle and cover. The Reichstag building became a symbolic objective in the closing stages of the fighting and its surroundings were heavily damaged. From a modeling point of view it is an environment that offers a contrast between masonry, rubble and equipment, and that rewards careful work with textures and weathering.
Start with the composition: lay the elements out on the surface and find the line of sight, and only then glue. Paint the masonry and the ruins from a dark base toward light highlights, and drybrushing will bring out the edges of the bricks and the plaster. Suggest dust and rubble with pigments applied dry and fixed with thinned binder, so that a uniform gray does not result. Figures in this scale do not need portrait detail but contrast: a darker base, a mid shade on the flat areas and a light accent on the raised parts. Weather the equipment sparingly with dust shades and leave the horizontal surfaces lighter than the vertical ones, as that makes the scene look natural.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, pigments and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
