About product

Curtiss P-36 / Hawk 75 in 1:72 Scale - Smer

An injection-molded plastic kit of this American prewar fighter in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Smer. The package contains plastic parts, a clear canopy, decals and instructions. It is a rebox of an older mold from the turn of the 1970s and 1980s that Smer issues in a new box. That means simpler detail: raised panel lines, a basic cockpit interior and a lower part count. With a mold of this age it is normal for small flash to appear and for the joints of the fuselage, the wing and the engine cowling to want filler and sanding. In return the kit offers a subject that is not a matter of course among the usual manufacturers.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-36, known in its export form as the Hawk 75, was an American all-metal fighter with a radial engine and retractable landing gear, created in the middle of the 1930s. It was the direct design predecessor of the famous P-40 Warhawk, which came about essentially by fitting a V engine into the same airframe. The P-36 was agile and easy to handle, but it lagged behind the European fighters in armament and speed. It became best known in foreign colors: French Hawk 75s fought in 1940 and scored the first kills, and further machines then flew in Finnish colors. A few American P-36s also got airborne during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Building and painting tips

Sand the mold seams down and remove the flash before gluing. Glue with thin cement for plastic and expect to fill the joints, mainly around the cowling of the radial engine. In this scale the cockpit interior can easily be improved with a seat and seat belts made from thin strip. Apply a primer and only then the paint, ideally with an airbrush. Striking schemes are on offer: French three-color camouflage, Finnish colors or the American prewar finish with polished metal.

FAQ

Yes. There are few parts and the build is straightforward. It is an older mold, though, so it is worth expecting to clean off flash and to fill the joints.
