An injection-molded plastic model of the American Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk stealth strike aircraft in 1:72 scale from the Japanese brand Hasegawa. The model faithfully captures the unmistakable angular, faceted shape of the airframe, which is the basis of the aircraft's low-observable configuration. It is a classic kit from a popular manufacturer with finely engraved surface detail.
The F-117A Nighthawk was the first operationally deployed aircraft designed primarily with reduced radar visibility in mind. Its airframe is made up of a set of flat surfaces (facets) that reflect radar waves away from the source, supplemented by radar absorbent materials. The aircraft was subsonic, powered by a pair of jet engines without afterburner, and served as a precision night strike machine able to carry guided munitions in an internal bomb bay. It was deployed above all on strikes against heavily defended targets.
Glue the plastic parts with a thin modeling cement for plastic and fill and sand the fuselage joints carefully so the sharp faceted edges are preserved. Lay down a base coat (primer) before painting. The typical flat black finish of the aircraft calls for a quality base and an airbrush; although the machine is all black, the surfaces come to life with fine shading of the individual facets and emphasis on the panels, so the model does not read flat.
