An injection-molded plastic model of the German Heinkel He 51A-1 fighter biplane with conventional wheeled landing gear in 1:72 scale from ICM. The A-1 version is the land-based fighter form, one of the first production variants of this type.
The Heinkel He 51 was among the first fighter biplanes of the newly rebuilt Luftwaffe in the middle of the thirties. The A-1 form flew as a land-based fighter with fixed landing gear and fabric covering on the control surfaces. The type gained combat experience in the conflict in Spain, where it soon came up against more modern monoplanes; after that it moved mostly into the training and auxiliary role. Even so it remains an important milestone in the early development of German fighters.
With a biplane, take care over the precise seating of the upper wing, the struts and the bracing; it works well to build them only once the fuselage and the lower wing have dried. Glue the plastic parts with thin modeling cement for plastic. Lay down a base (primer) before painting and set the metal and fabric surfaces apart by shade as well as by sheen. A gloss coat under the decals will keep the edges from lifting, and a matte varnish will unify the look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
