Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Clear Prop Models. The subject is the Polikarpov I-16 fighter in the Type 5 version, in the guise matching the period from 1938 to 1941, which is given right in the name of the item. The version and the period are exactly what set this model apart from the other I-16 models. The Starter Kit wording gives the edition of the package.
The I-16 was a single-engine cantilever low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and it was among the first production fighters of that layout. Its hallmarks are the short, stubby fuselage with a radial engine and a fairly small wingspan, which gave the aircraft high agility but also demanding handling. The Type 5 version is an earlier production guise with a closed forward fuselage and without the later changes to the armament and the canopy that the following types brought. In the period given the aircraft was in squadron service as a fighter as well as a trainer.
A short fuselage with a radial engine invites haste, but the transition from the engine cowling into the fuselage is exactly where the quality of the filling shows most. Paint the engine and the cockpit interior and pick them out with a wash before you close the fuselage up. Glue the landing gear with its characteristic wheel covers on at the very end. Fabric-covered control surfaces come into their own with a thin dark wash along the ribs. Lay the paint on in several thin coats, so that the fine surface detail stays visible.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
