About product

MiG-25 RBF, 1:72 scale, ICM

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian maker ICM capturing the reconnaissance version of the MiG-25 in the RBF designation. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The MiG-25 is among the largest combat aircraft of its day, so even in 1:72 scale this is a fairly big model with a large span and long engine nacelles, for which you have to allow enough room in the display case.

The real subject

The MiG-25 came about in the 1960s as the answer to a requirement for a machine capable of very high speeds and altitudes. A pair of jet engines, massive side air intakes and twin vertical tails gave the aircraft its characteristic angular silhouette. Because of the temperatures the airframe is exposed to at high speed, the structure is mostly steel, with aluminum only a smaller part and some highly loaded parts in titanium. That is unusual for an aircraft of this category and it is also why the MiG-25 was relatively heavy. The RB reconnaissance-bomber family carried reconnaissance equipment in place of the interception radar, and its later modifications differed mainly in the fit of sensing and electronic equipment, which is visible in the shape of the forward fuselage and the layout of the covers and sensors.

Building and painting tips

With large long fuselages it pays off to check the fit of the halves dry and bond the joints in sections with thin cement for plastic, so that a weld forms rather than a gap. Finish the cockpit and the nose section and, if the instructions call for it, weight the nose with lead before you close the fuselage, otherwise the model will sit down on its tail. Sand the junctions of the nacelles and the leading edges after filling and restore any engraved lines that have gone. Filler primer will then show up any remaining scratches and unevenness. The area around the exhausts stands out when you set it apart from the rest of the airframe in shade and sheen. Spray gloss varnish compatible with the paint used under the decals and unify the surface with a matte coat only at the end.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers interested in Cold War jets.
  • For collectors who assemble a range of variants of one type in one scale.
  • For builders with a little experience who can handle filling long joints.
  • For those who want a large, striking model without the demands of 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The reconnaissance-bomber family carried reconnaissance equipment in place of the interception radar, and the individual modifications differed mainly in its fit and in the related covers on the nose.

Rather for a moderately advanced builder. The long joints of the fuselage and nacelles call for patient filling and restoring the engraved lines.

On an aircraft with nose landing gear and a long tail it is usual. Follow the instructions and put the weight in before you close the fuselage.

They are not. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and glue and paints have to be bought separately.
