This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from RS Models captures the Polish RWD-13 light high-wing aircraft in the air-ambulance configuration of the Romanian White Squadron (Escadrila Alba). This boxing represents the medical version with a modified fuselage for carrying a casualty; it therefore differs from the sister release in Legion Condor markings. It is a short-run kit — the parts need more careful cleaning up and have no pronounced locating pins. The box usually contains clear parts for the glazing and decals for Romanian ambulance aircraft.
The RWD-13 was a Polish strut-braced high-wing aircraft, a light touring and liaison machine of the 1930s, popular for its short take-off run and easy handling. The ambulance variants carried a stretcher with a casualty and served as flying ambulances. After the outbreak of war a number of Polish RWD-13s were evacuated to Romania, where the local air force took them over and used them for liaison and medical duties. The famous White Squadron was also known for the fact that some of its aircraft were flown by women.
Glue the parts with thin plastic cement, fill the seams and sand them. With short-run kits it pays to dry-fit the parts before gluing. Apply a primer before painting; mask the cockpit and glue it only after the paintwork. Ambulance aircraft carried conspicuous red cross markings — apply the decals onto a gloss coat so that no silvering appears at the edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
