A publication devoted to the British supersonic interceptor BAC/EE Lightning. A reference for modelers and for readers interested in postwar aviation.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lightning was a British supersonic interceptor that originated at English Electric and, after the merger of the British aviation companies, came under the British Aircraft Corporation banner. That is where the double BAC/EE designation comes from. The machine reached the Royal Air Force at the start of the 1960s and its task was to climb as fast as possible to an aircraft approaching the British coast.
Its engine layout has no equal among fighters: two engines are housed in the fuselage one above the other, not side by side. The wing is strongly swept and sharply cut off, and the air intake opens in the nose around a central shock cone. The combination of great thrust and relatively small dimensions gave the aircraft a reputation for extraordinary rate of climb. Alongside the single-seat versions, two-seat trainers were also built, with the crew sitting side by side, and some machines were acquired by the air forces of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The title will be appreciated by modelers who build British Cold War jets and are looking for a reference for them, and by readers interested in postwar aviation. The Lightning is a rewarding subject also because its shapes are so distinctive that they can be compared at a glance with the model on the bench. This is a publication; a kit and modeling supplies are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
