The quality of a spray job shows at the edges. A crisp transition between two shades, a clean cockpit frame or an unspattered rubber part of a wheel never come from a steady hand, but from patiently covering what is around them. Masking tape is the simplest tool for that, and the width decides how quickly and how precisely you can work.

Where the 10 mm width fits

Ten millimeters is the most versatile width on the bench. It runs a straight dividing line between the upper and lower color, covers frames and transitions, wraps the rubber part of a wheel or a landing gear leg, and bends into a gentle curve without wrinkling. It can be laid side by side over a large area, and narrowed easily for small detail by trimming it lengthwise.

Work tips

• Mask before spraying; a crisp edge cannot be made afterwards on a dried coat.
• Lay the tape down in shorter sections rather than one long pull, otherwise it ripples on a curve.
• Press the edge down with a smooth tool along its whole length; paint creeps under only where the edge is not pressed down.
• Spray across the edge straight from above or from the tape toward the surface, never underneath it.
• Reduce the tack on a fresh coat by sticking the tape once to the back of your hand and pulling it off.
• Take it off slowly at a sharp angle as soon as the paint is dry to the touch.
