What the tape is for

Masking tape is basic equipment for anyone who sprays paint. It covers the area that is to stay in the original shade and leaves a crisp transition behind once it comes off. The width decides how you work: narrow tape follows curves, wide tape covers a whole area quickly and holds a straight edge without having to be laid down in several strips side by side.

Where the 20 mm width fits

Twenty millimeters is the width for large areas. Use it to cover a fuselage, a wing or the side of a vehicle when you apply the second camouflage shade, to set out a straight dividing line between the upper and lower color, and to cover a cockpit window in one piece. It also serves to hold the model down on a base while spraying and to join parts temporarily during a dry fit.

How to work with the tape

• Always mask before spraying; a crisp edge cannot be created afterwards on a finished coat.
• Press the edge of the tape down firmly with a smooth tool, because paint creeps under exactly where the edge is not pressed down.
• Apply the paint in thin coats and spray from the tape toward the surface, not underneath it.
• Before laying it on a delicate coat, reduce the tack by sticking the tape once to the back of your hand and pulling it off.
• Remove it slowly at a sharp angle, pulling it back over itself rather than straight up.
• Cut shaped openings with a sharp blade on a cutting mat, not directly on the model.
