What the tape is for

Masking tape is the basic aid when painting a model. You cover the area that is to stay in the original shade with it and only then spray; once it comes off, a crisp boundary stays on the model that no brush would give you. It is also used to hold parts temporarily, to lay out camouflage lines, or simply to keep you from touching a freshly painted surface while you work.

The 5 mm width in practice

Five millimeters is an all-round width for straight and gently waving boundaries: it is easy to hold between the fingers, it does not twist, and it still covers a decent strip of surface. Tight curves and small frames call for narrower tapes and large areas for wider ones; the same range also comes in other widths, so you can put a set together to match what you usually build.

How to work with it

• Lay the tape down before spraying, never onto the dried paint you want to divide off.
• Press the edge down along its whole length with a toothpick or a blunt tip, otherwise the paint creeps under.
• Apply the paint in thin coats and spray across the edge rather than at a sharp angle to it.
• Take the tape off slowly, at a sharp angle and across the painted area.
• On a delicate surface test the tack on a hidden area first.
