A wood structure by spraying instead of with a brush

Wood is recognized on a model by the irregular pattern of its grain. Imitating it by hand is slow and on small areas the result tends to be uneven. The stencil carries the pattern cut into an area of 60 x 40 mm, so the pattern is created in one spraying and looks the same on every part. The density of the pattern is built for the 1:48 and 1:32 scales.

Field of use

The size is aimed at the small areas where wood appears most often on models and in dioramas: crates and boxes, pallets, the load areas of vehicles, floors, jetties, fences and wall cladding. It also comes into its own where several wooden features in one scene are to look like a single whole.

How to work with the stencil

• first spray the area with a lighter shade and let it dry perfectly
• lay the stencil on and hold it down over its whole area, so that the edge does not stand off anywhere
• spray the darker shade perpendicularly, at low pressure and in several light passes
• between individual parts, shift or turn the stencil so that the pattern does not visibly repeat
• when you are done, wipe it while the paint is still wet, as dried paint narrows the cut-out

It will be appreciated by diorama builders and modelers who want wooden surfaces unified across several models. The pattern can be laid in two shades over one another, and the result then comes close to the real irregularity of wood.
