A stencil for spraying with an airbrush measuring 90 x 60 mm with a wood grain motif, laid out for 1:32 and 1:35 scales. You lay it on the surface and spray the pattern through the cut-outs, a pattern that would be painted with a brush only with difficulty: the drawing of the growth rings, small cracks and the irregularities of a plank. The advantage is repeatability. You can transfer the same pattern onto several parts one after another, so that the crates, the planking or the floor in a scene hold together.
Wood grain is rewarding on a diorama everywhere plain building material appears: on crates and boxes, on fences and enclosures, on footbridges, wagon beds, decks and on the floor in the interior of a building. It also serves well on large models in 1:32 and 1:35 scales, where a smooth surface looks suspiciously empty at first sight and wood grain gives it scale.
First spray the base tone of the wood and let it dry. Then lay the stencil on and hold it so that it sits on the surface with its whole weight, with no gap under the edge. Spray the darker shade perpendicularly and dry, that is, with a small amount of paint, otherwise the pattern will creep under the edge and go out of focus. Take the stencil off right away, while the paint is still wet, and wipe it, so that the fine cut-outs do not clog with deposit.
