A photo-etched detail set with the running gear side covers for a model of the British Archer self-propelled tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle kit but an accessory for a plastic model. Unlike plastic, thin metal can capture the real thickness of the sheet and the shape of the stiffeners, so after the swap the skirts no longer look oversized. Check the exact contents of the package against the illustration on the packaging.
The Archer was a British self-propelled anti-tank vehicle built on the chassis of the Valentine tank. Its characteristic features were a low open superstructure and a gun facing to the rear, over the engine compartment. The vehicle was brought into service in the last phase of the Second World War, and its low silhouette was a consequence of exactly this layout. The chassis inherited from the Valentine carried running gear covers at the sides, which protected the road wheels and the upper run of the track from mud building up.
The skirts are fitted only after the running gear is finished, so that it can still be worked on. Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and make the bends in a bender, so that the edges are straight along their whole length. Degrease the metal and cover it with a primer. They are glued with cyanoacrylate or with slow epoxy. It is precisely on the skirts that it pays to exploit the malleability of metal and suggest service deformation or a missing part. After the base color is painted, accentuate the seams with a dark wash and work pigments into the lower areas for mud and dust effects.
