Six acrylic shades for the desert camouflage of Israeli Air Force aircraft: a sand, an earth and two green tones for the upper surfaces, a light blue for the underside and a modern darker gray.
Responsibility details are not available.
Aircraft operated over the Israeli desert were given a finish that broke them up reliably above light sand and rocky ridges: two brown-yellow areas completed by a green field, divided by soft transitions, and against that a very light underside that dissolved the machine into the sky when seen from below. This pattern appeared on aircraft of French design, on their domestic successors and on imported American equipment, and it became the recognition mark of that air force.
On the real aircraft the boundaries between the fields were sprayed rather than sharp, so a soft mask lifted a little above the surface works well, as does free spraying from a shorter distance at low pressure. Desert service did the paint no good: the upper surfaces faded quickly and every repair created patches of a different tone, so unevenness in the result is rather an advantage here.
The shades carry general names taken from other color references, because the same tones also serve with other air forces. The group can therefore be used far more widely than for one particular scheme.
