What they are good for

A two millimeter hex head is aimed at places where the joint really does hold something: the feet of towing eyes, the mounting of add-on armor, the flanges of heavy axles or the frames of construction machines. It is precisely such coarse joints that tend to be played down on kits, because fine surface relief is hard to hold in a production run, and the model then looks smooth and flat. A separate head gives the joint back the height and the shadow that belong to it.

What the set offers

Hex bolt heads 2.0 mm in size according to the name of the item. You can easily verify the size by multiplication: in 1:35 scale the head corresponds to roughly seventy millimeters on the real machine, in 1:24 scale to just under fifty and in 1:16 scale to thirty-two. For small panels in small scales this dimension is therefore coarse; its place is with large models and with machinery that has really massive hardware.

Building and painting tips

A larger part is seated more easily than the smallest one, but all the more is every irregularity visible. Mark the spacing out with a pencil or help yourself with a strip of paper tape as a ruler. Apply a drop of cyanoacrylate glue to the model, carry the part with tweezers and leave it undisturbed for a while before you start sanding around it. When painting, let a darker shade settle around the foot of the head and lighten the high points; in service wear and rust gather in these places, so a few extra marks are faithful to the subject.
