Brush, or airbrush

A brush handles small areas, details and repairs well. Draw it in one direction, do not go over a stroke again until the coat has set, and lay down two lighter coats rather than one heavy one. Large areas come out smoother with an airbrush, but the consistency and the thinning ratio for spraying have to be allowed by the manufacturer; look for them on the packaging, and with an airbrush work up from a lower pressure and a smaller flow.

What to watch out for

Stir the paint before use, otherwise the settled pigment will stay at the bottom and the shade will be uneven. Do not work in dust and do not leave an open package standing longer than necessary. Test the shade on a piece to one side rather than straight on the model; once it has dried, paint often looks different from when it is wet. Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the safety instructions on the packaging.

Paint at room temperature, in a space without a draft and without dust; both cold and high humidity lengthen the drying and do a coat no good. Leave work in progress to dry covered with a loose box, and the dust will then not settle into the wet layer.
