A set of modeling pencils on a water base in light and dark tones. They draw shadows, highlighted edges and fine smears straight onto a finished coat.

Drawing with a lead gives a modeler control that a brush cannot offer: the tip goes exactly where you put it, and the mark can be blended out at any time with a damp brush into a soft transition. That is the charm of these pencils, because their lead dissolves in water and behaves half like a drawing and half like a paint.
This set rests on the contrast between dark and light tones. A dark lead is used to underdraw the shadow under rivets, in seams and under projections, while a light one picks out crisp edges and the places where light would break on the real machine. The method takes the place of laborious pre-shading and suits a model that is otherwise finished.
You can reach for them on an aircraft as readily as on a tank, on a wooden crate or on a figure. They work well on vertical surfaces, where a dark mark drawn from top to bottom imitates running grime, and around hatches, where a crew boot has worn the paint down to bare metal.
Seal the finished drawing with varnish, as without it a finger can wipe it away at the first handling. The tips are sharpened with an ordinary pencil sharpener, but because the lead is soft it pays to press gently and to settle for a shorter cone. Anyone who wants a finer mark can run the tip over abrasive paper and get an almost needle-like point for scribed lines and seams.
