Figures with a wooden or barklike surface are painted differently from characters of cloth and metal, because the main work is done by a combination of wash and dry brush, not by a precise line. At 54 mm size the texture is large enough to be worked area by area. The particular form of the casting is not stated here.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw leaving a margin and sand them back, and on a textured surface sand really only at the cut, or a smooth area will appear that will stand out conspicuously once painted. Do not putty any gaps after gluing to a smooth finish; once the putty has set, mark the grooves back into it with the point of a scalpel so that the texture continues. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). After the primer, lay a dark base down, let a dark wash run into the grooves and then build highlights with a dry brush in two or three steps; make the last, lightest pass very sparingly, so that the bark does not turn gray. Suggest moss and growth with pigment or with stippled patches of a more saturated green and brown, not as a continuous layer. Create the difference between dry wood and damp areas by combining a matte varnish over the whole with a satin or gloss one in spots where it is meant to be damp.
