Light buff stone in a fine grade. The shaker with a sieve in the lid holds 945 cubic centimeters of material for track ballast, roads and packed surfaces.

Railroads never hauled stone halfway across the country when they could quarry it a few kilometers from the line. The color of track ballast therefore follows local geology honestly. Limestone and dolomite regions give light stone tuned toward buff, granite country gives gray, regions with basalt give almost black. The shade this shaker carries is among the lightest of them and matches a quarry in limestone or in a sandy conglomerate.
The difference from dark stone is not only one of color. A light surface raises the contrast against the rail and the ties, which are almost always dark, and the whole track grid thereby stands out more sharply. In a photograph that tends to show at once. In the smaller scales light ballast has one more advantage: it looks airier, so the model does not press on the viewer with as much mass as a dark layer does. On a scene with a lot of greenery, on the other hand, it is a good idea to temper the lightness with dusting later on.
The grain is even, so it spreads well and holds the shape of a slope even without support. It is best spread dry and leveled before the fixing comes in turn, because once the layer has been wetted it can no longer be shaped comfortably. Light material can easily be darkened, while the reverse is far more difficult, and that is why it pays off to start from this one. Noticeably less mass belongs between the ties than on the slopes at the sides, as otherwise the impression arises that the grid is floating in the stone. It also helps to run a cardboard comb along the track after spreading, as it pulls the excess off the tops of the ties and leaves it where it belongs. Glue and track are not to be found in the package.
