Burnt Sienna/Dark Rust

AK Interactive Burnt Sienna / Dark Rust - oil paint 20 ml

This is a modeling oil paint from the Abteilung 502 oil range of AK Interactive, supplied in a tube of 20 ml. It is neither a kit nor a spray but a classic artist's oil paint adapted to the needs of the plastic modeler. The shade Burnt Sienna / Dark Rust is a saturated dark rust tone, exactly the color of dried, older rust on steel, on exhaust pipes, on hinges and on worn machine parts.

The oil paints of this range have a modified formula with a lower proportion of oil, so they dry flatter than ordinary artist's oils and hold better on a model. The paint is semi-opaque, so you can work with the base showing through. The fundamental advantage of oils is their long working time, because the paint can still be blended, toned down and washed out on the surface for a long time, which gives far more control over the effect than acrylics do.

Use

• Creating rust and rust streaks on metal parts, exhausts, tanks and machinery.
• Rust streaks and paint running down from edges, rivets and welds: the paint is applied in dots and blended downward with a brush.
• The best results come in combination with other rust shades (lighter and darker tones), so that the rust does not look uniform.
• The paint is thinned with a modeling thinner for oils (for instance an odorless type), not with water; brushes are cleaned with the same thinner.
• The recommended application is onto a flat, well dried coat, because oil blends and holds better on a flat surface.

Who it is for

For modelers who weather military vehicles, aircraft, ships, dioramas and figures and want full control over rust effects. Suitable for beginners too, because unlike with acrylics a mistake in oils is easy to fix: it is enough to wipe it off with thinner without damaging the painted coat underneath.

Safety note: this is an oil paint, and the thinners used for thinning and cleaning are solvent-based and flammable. Work in a well ventilated room, away from open flames, keep out of the reach of children and do not swallow. Dispose of cloths soaked in thinner safely.
