Woodland burnt umber, a warm dark brown for rich topsoil, mud and dulled brickwork. A water-thinnable pigment for plaster, wood and shaping paste. A 118 ml package.
Responsibility details are not available.
Burning turns the cool earth into a warm, brownish red color with great depth. On a layout and in a diorama it stands in for everything that is brown and old: trodden mud by a ford, topsoil on a freshly plowed field, a wet stump, sooted brickwork, rust sunk into stone. Where black would look artificial, burnt umber gives a shadow that stays colored.
The preparation behaves as a stain, not as an opaque coat. Once applied it runs into the texture of a casting and brings it out instead of flooding it. Anyone casting rocks and walls from plaster gets a surface with shadow and light this way in a moment, without having to paint every joint separately.
The bases given for it are absorbent: plaster, plaster cloth, shaping compound, wood, paper pulp and shaped foam. The preparation is non-toxic, it is thinned with water and a dried layer can be dissolved again, so even a later intrusion into finished terrain is possible. The bottle holds 118 ml. The intensity of the result is governed by the proportion of water: a thicker mixture turns a casting into an almost chocolate mass, while a heavily thinned one only dirties the surface lightly and lets what is underneath show through.
