About product

Chibi-Maru Yukikaze, a stylized non-scale kit from Fujimi

Chibi-Maru is a range from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi in which real warships are translated into a foreshortened, endearing form. The hull is shortened to a few centimeters, while the superstructures, the turrets and the masts keep the recognizable shape of the subject. The model therefore has no scale and cannot be lined up with scale ships. The package contains injection-molded plastic parts; the particular contents, the number of parts and the way they join are stated on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

Yukikaze was a Japanese Kagero class destroyer, brought into service at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. The ships of this class were built as fast escort and torpedo units with 12.7 cm gun armament and torpedo tubes for large-caliber torpedoes. Yukikaze went through the war in the Pacific and was among the few Japanese destroyers that saw the end of the war in serviceable condition; after the war she was handed over to China and served on under the name Tan Yang. The stylized model takes the characteristic silhouette from the subject: the low bow, the funnels and the torpedo tubes on the midships deck.

Building and painting tips

Foreshortened hulls have large smooth surfaces on which every imperfection shows, so sand the parting seam of the hull and fill it if necessary before painting. Separate small parts such as the masts and the gun barrels with a sharp knife or with nippers only just before gluing, so that they do not get lost. A brush as well as an airbrush will handle the painting; because of the small area of the model it pays to lay on thin coats, so that the engraved detail does not fill in. The model has a stable base, so it can be displayed even without a stand. If you want to heighten the effect, a fine wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges of the superstructures will help.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who want a quick build with no demands of scale
  • Collectors of Japanese naval subjects in stylized form
  • Beginners and younger modelers, as an approachable first ship model
  • Filling out a cabinet, or a gift for a fan of Japanese ships

The model is supplied unassembled. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

None. The Chibi-Maru range is deliberately stylized and foreshortened, so the model holds no scale ratio to the subject and cannot be lined up with scale ships.

Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package. The particular way the parts join is given in the instructions enclosed with the model.

Yes. The models of this range have a small number of large parts and a simple structure, so they are among the most approachable ship kits.

A Japanese Kagero class destroyer from the Second World War period. She was among the few Japanese destroyers that came through the war in the Pacific.
