Current flows from the rail into the model across an area the size of a pinhead. A thin film of oil, oxides and dust is enough for a locomotive to start jerking, the lights to flicker and the decoder to lose commands. Cleaning the rails is therefore not cosmetics but a condition of reliable running.
The product is mixed so as to dissolve grease and loosen the dirt settled on the top of the rail, and thereby restore the conductivity of the contact. It is applied to a cleaning pad or a cloth, which is then run along the rail.
The bottle holds 54.7 ml, which under normal running will last a long time, because it is dosed a drop at a time. The solution is water-soluble and non-toxic.
A property that is fundamental for a finished layout: the product does not damage scenery. A drop that runs off the top of the rail into the ballast bed or onto a grassy slope will therefore leave no stain and will not dissolve the binder of the turf. With aggressive solvents that very risk tends to be greater than the benefit of a cleaned rail.
The product deals with grease and a settled film, not with deep corrosion. If the top of the rail is oxidized into a dull brown layer, it has to be taken off mechanically first and only then maintained chemically. The combination of the two lasts longest: a rough cleaning once in a long while and a regular wipe with the solution in between. After a wipe it is advisable to let the track dry briefly before running resumes.
