About product

AK Interactive COMB WEATHERING BRUSH No. 5 - Rake Brush for Weathering

A rake brush (comb brush) from AK Interactive with synthetic fiber that is not drawn into a single point but divided into strands like the teeth of a comb. That lets the brush draw several irregular parallel marks in a single stroke - naturally, with none of the regularity of a machine. Drawing dozens of parallel lines by hand with an ordinary brush is impractical, and the result gives itself away. Size 5 is the larger of the pair: it has a wider reach and is effective where you need to cover a more extensive area.

Use

  • Streaks and running stains on large areas - the hull sides of a tank, the fuselage of an aircraft or the side of a ship, tankers and tanks.
  • Scratches and abrasion - parallel grooves in exposed places where a vehicle rubs.
  • Wood texture - the grain of planks, decks, crates and floors drawn quickly and in one stroke.
  • Parallel marks of wear and dirt - dust and rub drawn in the direction of the airflow or of running water.
  • Work with thinned paint or with liquid weathering products (effects, washes, oil paints); thick paint sticks the strands together and the rake effect disappears.

Who the brush is for

For modelers weathering military vehicles, aircraft, ships and dioramas who want realistic irregular marks instead of lines drawn with a ruler. Size 5 is the choice for large areas and a faster pace; for small vehicles, small scales and fine detail the smaller size 1 from the same range is more suitable. In practice the two sizes complement each other - lay the coarser effect in with the 5 and fine-tune the detail with the 1.

Care of the brush: clean it immediately when you have finished with the thinner matching the product you used (water for acrylics, mineral spirits or the appropriate thinner for oil and enamel effects), rinse it and shape the fiber back into a comb with your fingers. Do not leave the brush standing in a jar - bent fiber will no longer draw a straight mark. Store it dry, bristles upwards.

FAQ

Comb means just that - a comb. The fiber is divided into strands, so one stroke leaves several irregular parallel marks at once. It is used for streaks, scratches, wood texture and the parallel marks of wear, which would be slow and unnatural to draw with an ordinary brush.

Size 5 is the larger one - it covers a wider reach and is faster on large areas such as hull sides, a fuselage or decks. The smaller size 1 gives finer and denser marks and suits small detail and small scales. If you work in both modes, it is worth having both.

With thinned paint or with liquid weathering products - streaking effects, washes and oil paints. Thick unthinned paint sticks the strands of fiber together and the rake effect disappears.

Clean it right after work with the thinner matching the product you used, rinse it and shape the fiber back into a comb with your fingers. Never leave it standing in a jar - bent fiber will no longer make a straight mark. Dry and store it bristles upwards.
