A thicket you cannot see into

A dark tone in a coarse texture gives rise to growth that comes across as impassable. That is what a neglected hedge looks like, scrub at the edge of a wood or a band of greenery along a line that can hardly be got through. On a diorama such an element has a practical function too: it closes a scene off, hides its edge and prevents a view into emptiness behind the last model.

Texture and shade

The clumps are bulky and irregular, so once glued on they create a broken surface with shadows between the individual bumps. The dark green deepens this effect further, because it absorbs light and does not let an area flatten out. The foam is colored right through, so rubbing does not take the color off. According to the figure on the package the material will cover 353 cm². With a tall thicket, though, the consumption into volume is what decides, so the resulting length of a band of greenery tends to be shorter than a simple conversion of area would suggest.

Combinations that work

The best results are reached by a modeler who does not use the dark tone on its own but complements it from above with a lighter cast: on the upper edge of a thicket, where the sun falls, a thin layer of lighter green is glued on. The difference between a lit top and a dark side gives the mass depth. It is glued onto thicker glue applied to the terrain as well as to a vertical surface, and with tall formations a temporary support helps until the joint has dried. The excess is knocked off once it has cured and used again. The material is not intended for a single scale and will find a use in a military scene as well as on a model railroad.
