About product

Dry maple leaves for dioramas (Model Scene)

This is a scenic raw material, not a finished growth. The package holds tiny, faithfully shaped maple leaves in the coloring of fallen and dead foliage, which are scattered and glued exactly where you need them. The size of the leaves is chosen for 1:32 and 1:35 scales, that is for classic dioramas with hardware and figures. Fallen leaves are precisely one of the most rewarding details of a whole scene: in a photograph they immediately explain the season, reveal that the terrain is neglected, and break up a uniform area of grass or earth.

Where the leaves belong

They look most natural where wind and water would carry them in reality: along walls and fences, in ditches and wheel ruts, in the lee of wrecks and crates, at the edge of a path, around trunks and in hollows in the terrain. Avoid an even scatter over the whole area: in nature leaves never lie like a carpet of the same thickness. Alternate places with one or two leaves and places with a heaped layer, and in a layer let the lower leaves show through.

How to work with the leaves

A proven procedure is to lay a thin film of thinned PVA glue onto the area, scatter the leaves from your fingers or with tweezers and press them down lightly with a soft brush. Then fix the loose leaves with a drop of thinned glue or a light overspray of fixative from a greater distance, as a stream of air from an airbrush at close range would blow them away. If you want the color variety of a single tree and of an autumn scene, add individual leaves in layers and let them dry in between. Dry leaves can also be toned slightly with a very thinned wash or with pigment so that they blend with the base.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas in 1:32 and 1:35 scales
  • Modelers who want to establish the season of a scene unambiguously
  • Completing bases under hardware and figures
  • Photographers of models: leaves help the impression of scale markedly

This is a loose scenic raw material. Glue, a base and other materials are not included in the package.

FAQ

According to the name, for 1:32 and 1:35 scales. Because it is a loose material, it can be used with judgment in related scales too; it will just look somewhat larger or smaller.

A thin layer of thinned PVA glue under the leaves works well, followed by fixing with a drop of thinned glue or a light overspray of fixative from a distance.

No. These are loose leaves, so you decide the placement and the density yourself. Finished sheet growths are offered separately.
