The Sd.Kfz.234 was a German heavy armored reconnaissance vehicle of the late Second World War. It stood on eight wheels, all of them driven as well as steered, and the vehicle had a second driving position at the rear, so it could reverse as fast as it went forward. The body was a load-bearing shell without a separate frame, and power came from an air-cooled Tatra diesel engine, an advantage in dusty as well as freezing conditions. The Sd.Kfz.234/1 version carried a 2 cm gun and a machine gun in an open turret, which on the real vehicle was completed by a folding grille against hand grenades.
The basis is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale. The parts are held on sprues, so before building cut them off, clean up the mating faces and try the main assemblies together dry. Have side cutters, a sharp blade, a file, abrasive paper and cement for plastic ready for the build.
The eight wheels are visible from every side on the model, so it pays to spend time on getting them in line and to leave them separate until the end of the build for painting. The open turret offers a view inside, so the interior and the gun mounting are worth more careful work. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the fine engraving stays legible, and finally dust the walkways and fenders with pigments; a reconnaissance vehicle tended to be covered in dust and mud.
The set is for modelers of German vehicles in 1:35 scale with experience of ordinary injection-molded kits. Paints, glue, filler and other accessories are not included in the box, unless stated otherwise.
