The drill bit is intended for fine modeling work, that is, for holes made on a finished or part-built model and not for workshop drilling. A diameter of two point zero millimeters belongs among the larger of the commonly used modeling sizes. It suits mounting wires and pins, drilling holes for tubes, for barrels, exhausts, handles and everywhere you want to replace a solid plastic detail with a real hole.

Replacing an indicated hole with a real one is one of the cheapest ways to improve a model markedly. An injection mold often only hints at holes with a dimple, because for technical reasons it cannot create them. A drilled hole immediately adds a depth that no painting can replace. Drilling is likewise used when pinning parts, where a hole is drilled into both halves, a wire is inserted and the joint gains a strength that glue alone cannot manage.

Use

• Mark the place to be drilled first with the point of a needle or a scribing tool, otherwise the bit will slip.
• Drill into plastic slowly, best of all in a hand-held pin vise, where you have full control.
• When using a mini drill, choose low speeds, as heat melts plastic and it wraps around the bit.
• With larger diameters, start with a thinner bit and widen the hole gradually; the hole will be more accurate.
• Lead the bit squarely and do not press, as fine bits break from pressure rather than from the hardness of the material.
• After work, clean the swarf off the bit and store it so that the point is not knocked about.

For modelers who detail kits, pin parts with wire or work with resin and accessories. It is used when building aircraft, equipment, figures and dioramas, that is, across the whole modeling spectrum.

The drill bit is sharp and can break if handled roughly. Work with eye protection, especially when using a mini drill, and keep it out of reach of children.
