The U-STAR modeling drill bit, 2.5 mm in diameter

A drill bit 2.5 mm in diameter from the workshop range of the U-STAR brand. It serves to drill a clean circular hole in plastic, resin, wood and thin brass sheet. It is precisely this diameter that a modeler needs surprisingly often: to open up the mouth of a larger exhaust, to seat a magnet, for a pin around which a moving part turns, or for a hole for a wire that joins two parts of an assembly more firmly than glue alone could manage.

How to work with the drill bit

• Clamp it into a hand-held pin vise or into the chuck of a micro drill.
• Mark the center of the hole beforehand with the point of a knife or a center punch, otherwise the bit will slide sideways over a curved surface.
• Drill into plastic in two stages: first pilot-drill with a thin bit, and only then go to the final diameter.
• Choose low speeds and do not press. Heat from friction melts plastic and it wraps around the cutting edge.
• Clean up the burr around the hole with the edge of a knife or with fine sanding paper.
• After work, wipe the bit dry, so that no moisture stays on the cutting edge.
