Small turfs – early summer are finished pieces of grassy growth in a rich summer green. In a scene they are simply laid down and glued, with no static grass and no applicator.

A finished painted turf from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene, that is a piece of grassy surface ready to be planted into a diorama straight away. It is not a loose static grass and not a semi-finished product — the growth already has its shape, its gradation of height and its color transition. The small format is intended for local filling in: between paving, at the foot of a structure, into a ditch, on the edge of a track or anywhere a continuous lawn would look artificial.
Early summer is the richest green shade in the sequence of seasons. The grass is fully grown, not yet touched by drought, but already without the light freshness of spring — it corresponds roughly to June and the first weeks of July. In a scene it is a universal choice, because this is what a meadow looks like for most of the growing season in the temperate zone. It goes well with the darker green of trees, with damp terrain by water and with the dusty summer surface of field tracks.
Clean the base, apply a thin layer of PVA glue, press the turf down and leave it weighted until dry. Working the edges is the key: thin them out with tweezers or scissors into an irregular shape so that no visible edge forms, and cover the transition with soil, sand or fine leaf litter. When laying several pieces, leave irregular gaps between them and fill them with another material — a perfectly matching surface always looks like a carpet. You can create trodden paths in a scene by pressing the grass down with a flat tool.
The turfs are supplied finished and painted. The glue, the base and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
