A graduated set of acrylics for modulating the surfaces of German armored vehicles from the early years of the Second World War.

Wehrmacht tanks rolled into Poland, into France and into the first months of the campaign in the East in a uniform dark gray. It was a practical peacetime choice, but in the field it looked like a heavy monolith, and photographs from the front show how quickly mud, dust and improvised finishes painted over it. That is exactly why a gray armored vehicle gets lost on a model if it receives a single flat coat from one bottle.
The set is built on several versions of the same color that differ in brightness. The darkest goes into the gaps, under the fenders and into the shadows between the road wheels, the middle tone forms the base of the vertical walls, and the lightest is applied to the horizontal surfaces of the turret and the hull, where daylight would fall. The transitions are sprayed freehand so that no visible step appears between the levels. The result gives the model depth even before the washes and the dry brush come into play.
This is a water-thinnable acrylic formulated for airbrush application. It dries matte, it takes both lacquer and acrylic washes, and pigments can be worked over it without trouble. Shake the bottle thoroughly before spraying, because gray shades tend to have the heavier filler settled at the bottom. A primer is recommended on plastic, ideally a dark one: the gray gains depth over it and the lighter levels of the set stand out. Seal the finished model with a matte varnish, which evens out the sheen between the coats and prepares the surface for dust and mud.
