Four jars of dry pigment put together for fantastical machines. They cover the sooty deposit behind a nozzle, the decayed surface of a long-abandoned machine, a scorched trace and the cold bluish sheen of metal.
Responsibility details are not available.
A pigment is an exceptionally finely ground powder with no binder. It is picked up onto the model with a soft brush and dusted into corners, around rivets and along welds, that is where real dust and fly ash would settle of their own accord. As long as it is not sealed it can be swept away or moved at any time, which is invaluable while the right degree is being sought. It is fixed either with a drop of fixer laid on from the side, or with mineral spirits, which soaks in under the powder and after evaporating leaves it lying in place.
The first shade matches the dark sooty deposit that forms around rocket nozzles and exhaust openings. The second has the color of the decayed deposit on a wreck that has stood somewhere so long that it has blended into its surroundings. The third recalls the edge of an area scorched by a hit from an energy weapon, where the surface overheated and lost its color. The fourth is a cold blue toward metal, with which a hint of sea damp or of cold light in shadow can be suggested.
It works best to proceed in layers. First a little powder is applied and sealed, then more is added. Sealed pigment darkens and loses something of its velvety look, which has to be reckoned with while the shade is still being mixed. A stiff brush with trimmed bristles also does good service, used to tap the excess out of the joints and give the deposit an irregular edge. On space machines it makes sense to keep to one direction: the deposit should follow the stream of gases back from the nozzle, not flow around the model all the way round. The model, brushes and a fixer are not in the package.
