Clear Prop Models 1:72 TBM-3/TBF-1C Avenger painting mask (kabuki paper)

This is NOT an airplane model but a set of painting masks in 1:72 scale from the Clear Prop Models brand. The masks are precisely cut from kabuki paper and serve to mask the complex glazing of a model of the Grumman and General Motors Avenger carrier torpedo bomber in the TBM-3 and TBF-1C versions. According to the product name they are cut for the Hobby Boss kit.

The real subject

The Grumman TBF Avenger (and its license-built TBM variant from General Motors) was an American carrier torpedo bomber of the Second World War with a crew of three and a dorsal gun turret. The extensive glazing of the pilot's compartment and of the gun position is laborious to mask, which is why pre-cut masks come in very handy.

How to use the masks

• Lift the masks carefully off the sheet and transfer them onto clean glazing.
• Press the edges down so that paint does not creep under the mask.
• Spray in thin coats and take the mask off while the paint is still tacky.
• Kabuki paper follows the shapes and leaves a sharp edge to the paint.
