Operators of the US counterterrorism unit in 1:32 scale. Figures with no national insignia, with ballistic protection and modified equipment.
Responsibility details are not available.
The formation was established in 1977 on the model of the British counterterrorism units, and its founder pushed through a selection process that failed most applicants. The first large deployment ended in 1980 in failure in the Iranian desert, where the landing force stopped short of its objective. Grenada and Panama followed, and in 1993 the street fighting in the Somali capital that fixed the unit in the public mind.
What matters is the absence of everything that otherwise marks a soldier out: ranks, insignia and uniform clothing are all missing. What appears instead is a mixture of civilian and military items, a light ballistic helmet resembling a sports model, a vest with pouches arranged to the wearer's own judgment, goggles against dust and a full beard. The figures tend to have bent knees and the weapon held at the shoulder, that is the stance trained for fighting in built-up areas.
The set is aimed at the 1980s and 1990s, when this look settled. It holds together splendidly with a scene of a city street: a shattered facade, a heap of tires, an overturned vehicle. It can also be combined with figures of the local armed men the unit went up against.
The 1:32 size allows the loops, the buckles and even the straps of the goggles to be rendered. The number of pieces is missing from the name. The castings come unpainted, and with this subject in particular a sparing palette helps, because a uniform shade would destroy the impression of improvised equipment.
