Scottish mercenaries of the Thirty Years' War at the small reduction of 1:72. Musketeers and pikemen in foreign service, who give a camp scene both character and a human dimension.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the 1620s and 1630s tens of thousands of men left Scotland for Danish and Swedish service. Whole regiments fought in them under their own commanders, the best known of them led by Donald Mackay, and their appearance differed markedly from the continental infantry: a knitted cap, a cloak of coarse wool and simple footwear instead of high boots. The armament, on the other hand, was the usual one, that is the long musket with a rest and, in the second rank, the pike.
A camp scene is made up of tents, fireplaces, wagons and crates, and all these objects have an ambiguous size in a model. But one seated figure by the fire is enough and the viewer immediately works out the diameter of the kettle, the height of the tent canvas and the length of the shaft of the wagon. With a mercenary set one more advantage comes on top of that, namely the relaxed carriage of the body, which brings into a scene the calm between battles.
The package consists of the castings alone, without a base, terrain or paints.
A suitable setting is an encampment by a fortress rampart, a ford on a road or the rear of a siege battery. A few figures in conversation and one turned with its back to the viewer can turn ordinary groundwork into a scene that reads as a situation and not as a display case.
