The mounted guard of Cardinal Richelieu at a reduction of 1:72. The armed escort of the first minister, a counterweight to the royal company and an ideal subject for a scene with two rival groups.
Responsibility details are not available.
Armand Jean du Plessis, cardinal and the guiding figure of French politics in the 1620s and 1630s, had an armed escort of his own. His guardsmen differed from the monarch's musketeers in the color of their cloaks and were in open rivalry with them, which the memoirs of the period recorded richly. In fact this was a select unit whose existence reflected the position of power of the man who paid for it.
This set offers something that other figures do not allow: setting two sides against each other that need not differ in period or equipment, only in allegiance. A diorama with such a subject holds the attention longer, because the viewer looks for the difference between the groups. Giving each side a different surface, for example paving and beaten earth, and leaving a narrow gap between them as a notional boundary, has proved itself.
The set holds unpainted castings. Paints, a base and terrain material are not enclosed.
A narrow lane between houses, a bridge over a ditch or the open space in front of a palace suggest themselves. In a confined space the relation between the rider and the building stands out, because the eye immediately compares the height of the head with a window sill and estimates the size of the whole set.
