About product

Tupolev Tu-22M3 Backfire-C in 1:144 scale - a Litaki kit

A kit of the heavy supersonic Tu-22M3 bomber in 1:144 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer Litaki. It is a fairly new brand making its name with detailed models of large machines in a small scale. The basis is injection-molded plastic with engraved panel lines, complemented by photo-etched sheet, 3D printed parts (among them the exhaust nozzles and the bomb load) and painting masks for the canopy and the wheels. The wing can be built with the movable section in various positions. Despite the small scale it is a richly equipped and demanding kit - the air intakes and the landing gear are made up of a larger number of parts, so it is not for beginners.

The real subject

The Tupolev Tu-22M is a Soviet, and today Russian, supersonic bomber with variable-geometry wings, designed as a carrier of long-range missiles and as a naval strike aircraft against ship formations. The M3 version is the most advanced production variant: it has angular, sharply cut air intakes, a modified nose and a different arrangement of the rear defensive gun turret - those are the features that tell it apart from the earlier versions. The Tu-22M3 is still in active service with Russian long-range aviation and some of the aircraft have been upgraded. Although 1:144 is a small scale, the Tu-22M3 itself is a huge machine - with a length of over 42 meters and a span of more than 34 meters with the wing spread, the model comes out about 29 cm long with a span of around 24 cm. It will certainly not disappear on a shelf.

Building and painting tips

Glue the plastic parts with a thin cement for polystyrene and the 3D printed and photo-etched components with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Dry-fit the air intakes and the landing gear legs and decide on the wing position in advance. Do the base coat over a primer, with an airbrush and in thin layers. Bring out the panel lines with a capillary paneliner, apply the decals onto a gloss varnish and finally even out the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Advanced modelers who can handle multi-part assemblies in a small scale
  • Collectors of bombers and of machines with variable-geometry wings
  • Anyone interested in modern Russian and Soviet aircraft
  • Those who want a large aircraft in a small space in a display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The basis is injection-molded plastic. The package is complemented by photo-etched sheet, 3D printed parts (for example the exhaust nozzles and the bomb load) and painting masks.

With the Tu-22M3 it is not. The real aircraft is over 42 meters long with a span of more than 34 meters with the wing spread, so even in 1:144 the model comes out about 29 cm long with a span of around 24 cm.

Yes, the Tu-22M3 remains in active service with Russian long-range aviation and some of the aircraft have been upgraded.

Rather not. The air intakes and the landing gear are made up of a larger number of small parts and the box includes photo-etch and 3D printed components - we recommend it to more experienced modelers.
