Three finished model trees from the German maker HEKI, ten centimeters tall. A weeping willow has a crown whose branches hang straight down to the ground, so at first glance it differs from every other tree on the layout. That shape also suggests where the tree belongs: a willow grows by water, and on a model it therefore becomes a reliable marker of a bank.
The trees are pushed into a pre-drilled hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. Set the willow so that the crown leans over the water surface, as that is typical of this tree and gives the scene movement. Spread the cascading branches carefully downward with your fingers after unpacking. Add taller grass and reeds under the tree, as a willow next to a mown lawn looks out of place.
For builders of layouts and dioramas with water features and for modelers looking for a striking single tree. A willow can even serve as the only prominent tree in a whole scene, because the cascading crown draws attention on its own. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
