Form'it - Construction Foil 60 x 120 cm - Smooth

What it is

Forming foil from the Form it range, a sheet measuring 60 x 120 cm, that is 0.72 square meters. It serves as a base for terrain: you lay the foil on a load-bearing framework, shape a hill, a slope, an embankment or a channel by hand, and then work the shape that results with the usual means of scenery. This version is smooth, without surface structure, so it suits anywhere the final look is supplied by a top layer.

Where you will use it

On a layout when building cuttings and embankments, by a tunnel portal, on a slope behind a station, in a diorama as terrain under a cottage or as a knoll under equipment. Compared with plaster bandages it has two advantages: you work dry, so the workshop does not get messy, and you can change your mind about the shape, because the foil can be lifted and refolded before you fix it permanently.

How to work with it

First build a rough framework of terrain, for example from strips of cardboard or blocks of polystyrene, so that the foil has something to rest on. Then lay it on, shape it from the highest point out to the edges and draw the transitions to the flat away to nothing; a sharp edge between a hill and a base always gives a scene away. Cut the overlaps off and tuck the edges under the surrounding terrain. Finally finish the surface the way you are used to, that is with paint, scatter, grass and growth, and with stones and scree in gullies if you wish.
