About product

Ansaldo A.1 Balilla - Italian service, PREMIUM, 1:32, Lukgraph

A model of the Italian First World War fighter biplane in 1:32 scale from the Polish manufacturer Lukgraph. It is a fully 3D printed resin kit, not injection-molded plastic. The box is focused on Italian service - the manufacturer states four Italian color schemes and one Greek for it. A pilot figure is included, along with a fully equipped interior with the engine and a removable engine cowling, so the powerplant can be left exposed. The struts, the landing gear and the wings are designed for reinforcement with wire.

The PREMIUM designation means richer contents according to the manufacturer: additional transparent decals imitating fabric and wood and turnbuckles for the rigging, which give the bracing a realistic look. Alongside the Italian version the manufacturer also offers a separate box with Polish aircraft - if you want Italian markings, this is the right one.

The real subject

The Ansaldo A.1 Balilla was a single-seat fighter biplane and was one of the few Italian fighters of native design from the First World War - the Italian air service otherwise flew largely on French types at the time. The aircraft was compact and fast in level flight, but because of its handling it did not win the same favor with frontline pilots as its French rivals, so it never really made its mark in the front line. Its postwar career is more interesting: the Balilla also reached other European users and was, among other things, one of the first fighters of the newly formed Polish Air Force. That is precisely why Lukgraph releases it in two versions - with Italian and with Polish aircraft.

Building and painting tips

Do not bond 3D printed parts with polystyrene cement - it will not hold. Use cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and epoxy on loaded joints. Wash the parts with soapy water before painting, cut off the print supports and sand wet - resin dust is harmful to health, do not inhale it, use a respirator and ventilate. Without a primer the paint does not hold well on a print. Finish and paint the interior and the engine before you close the fuselage - thanks to the removable cowling it pays to do a proper job on the powerplant, because it will be seen. The most demanding part of the build is the rigging: it is a lot of work and takes patience, but without bracing wires a biplane looks unfinished. The premium edition makes it easier with the turnbuckles supplied.

Who the model is for

  • For experienced modelers - 3D printing, rigging and fine parts are not for a beginner.
  • For collectors of First World War aircraft in the large 1:32 scale.
  • For anyone interested in the Italian air service and in less common types outside the mainstream.
  • For those who will appreciate the pilot figure, the exposed engine and the premium decals with a wood and fabric effect.
  • Not suitable for children or as a first model.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a 3D printed resin kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

This box is focused on Italian service - the manufacturer states four Italian color schemes and one Greek for it. The box with Polish aircraft is released separately by the manufacturer as its own product.

No. It is a fully 3D printed resin kit. It is not bonded with polystyrene cement - you need cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy. The parts are washed before painting, sanded wet, and a primer is essential. Resin dust must not be inhaled.

On a First World War biplane the rigging is the main and most demanding part of the build and takes a lot of time. Without it, though, the model does not look finished. The premium edition contains turnbuckles, which take the result to another level.
