About product

The winter equipment of German paratroopers in 1:32 scale

The counterpart to the tropical variant from the same brand: Fallschirmjäger equipped for the cold. MARS Model is a Ukrainian brand devoted exclusively to figures, and it supplies this set in plastic, in 1:32 scale and entirely without paint.

Winter campaigns and what they demanded

From the winter of 1943 on, German paratroopers appeared above all in a ground role, in which the defense of difficult terrain rested on them. The winter campaigns, whether in the Italian mountains or later in the Ardennes, called for layered equipment: quilted coats and trousers, capes, gloves, hoods and improvised white camouflage. The silhouette of the soldier changes markedly with it - the figure is bulkier, the movement more ponderous, the outlines softer. For a modeler that is rewarding precisely because winter figures look quite different from the same units in summer dress.

How to paint winter

White is never painted pure white. Use a broken tone with a gray or beige cast and let a darker base show through underneath, so that the cloth does not come across like paper. Wash the castings and clean up the seams. Before gluing, test the glue on a sprue offcut; super glue tends to be the safer bet. Finish the snow in the terrain and on the equipment only after the rest of the work, otherwise you will clog up all the detail.

A suitable choice for

  • scenes from the Italian mountains and from the winter fighting in the west
  • modelers who want to practice painting white and broken tones
  • collectors of German airborne units
  • display cases with vehicles in 1:32 scale

The goods are unpainted. To finish them you will need paints and glue of your own.

Reach for a broken shade, never for pure white, and leave the shadows in the folds noticeably darker.

No, the plastic is bare and the painting is entirely up to the modeler.

Yes, the winter layering changes the silhouette of the figures; they are bulkier and less articulated.
