An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Medium Mark A Whippet medium tank in 1:35 scale from Meng. The model offers a detailed hull with the tall fixed superstructure at the rear, well-worked running gear and a set of four machine guns. According to the manufacturer the box contains photo-etched parts, easily assembled glue-free link tracks and a decal sheet for several color options. For this subject Meng is among the makers with a high level of detail.
The Whippet was designed at the end of 1916 as a faster complement to the heavy and slow British tanks. It was powered by two Tylor gasoline engines, each of which drove one track; that gave it a high speed for its day, around 13 km/h. The crew numbered three men and the armament was four Hotchkiss machine guns in a fixed polygonal superstructure at the rear of the hull. It went into action for the first time in March 1918 and proved itself in the pursuit of a retreating enemy; around two hundred were built in total and some served after the war as well.
Assemble the running gear and the glue-free link tracks and paint the interior of the superstructure before you close it up. Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Lay down a primer and spray with an airbrush; khaki or a multicolor camouflage suits First World War tanks. The weathering comes from a wash in the hollows, highlighting of the rivets and the edges, and dust and mud pigments on the running gear.
