A resin, 3D-printed detail set from Reskit in 1:35 scale for the plastic CH-54A Tarhe kit from ICM. According to the manufacturer it comprises a cargo hoist with a hook and a load leveler and reels with lashing hooks. Please do not mistake it for a model: it is not a kit of the helicopter but an accessory that assumes you already have the base ICM kit.
A crane helicopter without a hoist and a hook is a helicopter with nothing to hang anything from. The lifting and lashing equipment is exactly what turns a model into a Skycrane at work rather than an aircraft standing on an apron. The hoist, the hook, the leveler and the reels with hooks are moreover an assembly of small, thin and intricate parts, exactly the type where 3D printing manages detail that can be neither cast nor injection-molded. The set is therefore ideal for a diorama with a slung load, where the lifting equipment is the main spectacle.
The CH-54A Tarhe, nicknamed the Skycrane, is an American heavy crane helicopter. Its skeletal frame with no cargo fuselage came about not out of thrift but by design: the load or a detachable cabin is slung underneath. In Vietnam it earned its reputation partly by recovering shot-down machines, which it could carry away from under the enemy's nose.
Cyanoacrylate or epoxy, and nothing else will do: cement for polystyrene does not work on resin. Cut the small parts of the hoist and the hooks off the supports carefully with a sharp knife, ideally over a mat so that they are not lost. Washing the parts before painting in lukewarm water with dish soap is practically compulsory with 3D printing (residue of uncured print resin). Do any cleaning up wet and do not inhale resin dust. Steel cables deserve to be acknowledged: a metal shade with a dark wash looks better than plain black.
A detail set, not a model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, without the base kit. Glue and paints are not included in the package.
