The Panther, in German designation Sd.Kfz. 171, was a medium tank of the Second World War that combined heavily sloped armor with a long 7.5 cm gun of 70 calibers in barrel length. The suspension stood on interleaved road wheels sprung on torsion bars, thanks to which the tank had a smooth ride for its weight. The Ausf. A version received a new commander's cupola and a ball mount for the machine gun in the front of the hull instead of the earlier letterbox. The early form matches machines from the start of production of this version.
The plastic kit in 1:35 scale is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The build covers the whole suspension with the road wheels, the hull and the turret with the gun.
The interleaved arrangement of the wheels is the most laborious part of building a Panther. Fit the wheels to a finished and true suspension and keep checking that they all sit in one plane, otherwise the track cannot be tensioned. The upper run of the track on a Panther rests directly on the road wheels, as the tank has no return rollers, so any inaccuracy in the seating of the wheels shows on the track. The sloped armor plates are best painted with edge highlighting, because it was exactly there that the paint wore off first on the real machine.
The kit suits modelers of German Second World War vehicles who want a particular production form of the Panther, and builders of scenes from 1943 and 1944. Given the number of suspension parts it is rather a build for a more advanced modeler. Paints, glue and filler are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
