The Type 82 was a light off-road car of the German army and technically it goes back to the car that Ferdinand Porsche designed for the civilian market. It shared with it the air-cooled four-cylinder engine mounted behind the rear axle and the central tube frame, but it was given a higher ground clearance, a limited-slip differential and reduction gears in the hubs of the rear wheels. The angular sheet-metal body without door fillings weighed little, and that was enough for the vehicle: with only one axle driven it got further than anyone would expect. From 1940 to the end of the war more than fifty thousand of them came off the line and they served on every front.
Five wheels cover the four positions on the axles and the spare. The tire has a coarse off-road tread pattern in the version designated V.1, that is one of the patterns the vehicle wore. A front torsion bar is included as well, a feature of the front suspension that is partly visible on the finished model.
A molded plastic wheel always has a mold parting line around its circumference and that runs exactly across the tread pattern. Sanding the seam away damages the pattern and nothing better can be done about it. A casting is made differently: the pattern is unbroken all the way round, the grooves have a sharp bottom and the sidewall of the tire carries fine lettering that cannot be got into an injection mold at this size. The wheels are also often cast slightly flattened at the point of contact with the ground, so that the vehicle on a diorama stands as if it had weight on it.
The work takes half an hour: nip them off, true up the seating face and fit them. The rest of the time goes on painting, because on a vehicle from the front the rubber is never painted with a single black.
